I just finished printing the pieces for HFRR Toon Gun. I am so happy with the results. I am glad I took the time to get the scale as close as to the movie as possible. These are the steps I took.
Refining Scale:
To ensured accurate proportions I located a photo of it which had a coffee cup in the same frame. Using measurements of a coffee cup I had for reference I scaled the photo using those measurements. By doing so gave me a close to scale photo which I printed in full scale and used digital calipers to measure, which I used to scale the STL file. I divided the printing process, utilizing my Ender S1 Plus for larger parts and the Ender 3 for smaller components.
Enhancing Realism with Wood-like PLA:
To replicate the look and feel of real wood, I experimented with 40% wood PLA for the hand grips. My goal was to achieve a more authentic appearance. I devised a process to enhance the wood-like characteristics of the filament which I will go more in detail in a later post.
Printing Parameters:
I printed all of the parts in PLA other then the gribs which I used 40% wood PLA. The nozzle temperature was set at 219°F, with the bed temperature set to 58°F. A 25% infill provided strength while minimizing material usage. Supports were added where needed, and a brim was utilized for improved adhesion. I maintained a print speed of 60 for accurate and consistent output.
In my next post I'll explain the steps that I take to prepare the model, so a smooth surface can be achieved.
